About My Blonde Moments

I'm a late 20-something, displaced midwesterner, living a new life in Texas. I am trying to figure out life in a new (and a bit strange) place all while trying to maintain my sanity and have a little fun.

Moving madness – Part 2

Update – WordPress is acting like a jerk and is not properly uploading a lot of the pics that are supposed to be in this post ūüė¶ You’ll have to wait until later to see the curtains and ice cream. ūüė¶

Happy Tuesday, loves! I do love a three-day¬†weekend. However, it always makes coming back to work that much harder. I guess the good news is that I took this Friday off to move, so this is just a three-day week ūüėČ

This past weekend was filled with more moving fun. I now have almost all of my “stuff” moved into Michael’s apartment. I just have the essentials left at my old place (I’m staying there this week, so obviously I still needed some clothes, hair stuff, food…you get the idea) which should make the official move on Friday a breeze! Or at least that’s what we’re hoping.

Perry officially got moved to the new place this weekend and he wasted no time in making his presence known!

He's like a tornado of destruction!

That little stinker also broke a glass in the middle of the night last night that went unpictured.

Maybe if I hide in here they won't know it was me that made that mess...

Our big accomplishment this weekend was hanging some new curtains in the living room. The apartment has VERY white walls (white everything for that matter), so the curtains really helped make the place feel more homey.

Now, let’s just hope Perry doesn’t rip the curtains to shreds. He already thinks they are his new gigantic play-toy!

We also found some time for fun this weekend in the form of date-night at hibachi and some Ohio ice cream that I found down here in Texas!!

Getting ready to head out Saturday night

I must say, I’m more than ready to have this whole move completed. I just do not do well with chaos and change, so I’m feeling pretty frazzled lately. The washer decided to die on us yesterday mid-wash (with loads of other laundry still waiting to be done) and it may have caused me to have a total melt-down. There was just not enough ice cream in the world to fix that freak-out!

However, I’m trying to stay positive that the weather has cooled off considerably (mid-80’s…yay!!), the washer was fixed (thank God b/c I have lots of stuff to wash and doing it old-school style in the nearby¬†dorm was not so much fun), and the move is almost complete! Just taking it one day at a time ūüėČ

Friday photo flashback – It’s football season!

With September comes one of the most glorious times of the year. The start of college football season!

I know you’ve seen plenty of Ohio State stuff on my blog, but I can’t let the first game of the season go unmentioned. I promise to tone down the OSU talk for a while after this post ūüėČ Not forever, just for a little while!

I sure will miss being on campus this weekend to cheer on my Buckeyes!

I have to confess, I kind of miss the Ohio State Marching Band the most! They don’t call them the Best Damn Band in the Land for nothing. Script Ohio is one of the band’s traditions that gives me chills every time I see it. I’ll never understand how they pull it off without crashing into one another.

So friends, regardless of your team of choice, I wish you all a happy start to the football season! Unless you are a Michigan fan, then we have problems ūüėČ

Drive, Drive on down the field,
Men of the scarlet and gray;
Don’t let them through that line,
We’ve got to win this game today,
Smash through to victory,
We cheer you as you go!
Our honor defend we will fight to the end
for OHIO!

Brownies + Reese’s = A better day!

I’m not sure what the deal has been lately, but things have been a little cray-cray. From work craziness to general life frustrations (like my iPhone suddenly¬†using¬†a crap ton of data for no apparently reason¬†and causing me overages or my constantly deflating car tire), the past two weeks have been, well, nuts!

To avoid pulling out my hair or sitting in a corner crying in frustration, I busted out my baking supplies and got to work. I love to bake and I think¬†it’s one of the best forms of stress-relief when things get a little crazy. Plus, enjoying the end result is an added bonus ūüėČ

What could possibly be better than a brownie with a Reese’s cup inside. All wrapped up in a nice little tin-foil package?!

This recipe is always a huge hit, so I wanted to share it with all of you as a “bad day cure” in case things ever get a little cray-cray.

Ingredients: 1 box of brownie mix, 1 bag of Reese’s minatures, eggs, water,¬†oil, and foil cupcake wrappers

Directions: Prepare brownie mix as indicated on package

Unwrap about 16 Reese’s cups and set aside.

If you live in Texas (or the surface¬†of the sun)¬†your Reese’s cups will likely be a little soft and this will happen as you try to unwrap them:

To avoid this problem simply pop your Reese’s cups in the fridge for about 5 minutes before unwrapping.

Line a cupcake pan with foil wrappers. Do not use the paper ones, they will stick to the brownie!

Using a large tablespoon, fill the wrappers just over 1/2¬†full. Do not over fill! Then, place a Reese’s cup in the center of each muffin. Do not press down!

As you can see, the Reese’s will sink a little on their own.

Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 22 minutes or until set. Do not over bake! I use a toothpick the first time to test the brownie part. When it comes out mostly clean, they are done!

To avoid eating all of the Reese’s cups you need for the recipe, keep a bag of mini Reese’s on hand to snack on while they bake ūüôā

When the brownies are done baking, take them out of the oven and allow them to sit in the pan for about 1 minute to firm up a bit. When they’re not blazing hot, transfer them to a cooling rack. Just don’t let them sit in the pan too long or they’ll¬†continue to bake¬†(another reason you don’t want to over bake them in the oven).

Let them cool completely before storing. However, feel free to sneak one while it’s still warm to treat yourself. You have to taste test them, after all! ūüėõ

Oh yea, and don’t forget to lick the spoon when you’re all done! If this doesn’t make¬†your bad day better, I don’t know what will!

Toxic friends

I know this post is a little deeper than normal, but bear with me as it is something that has been on my mind quite frequently lately.

We’ve all had them. That friend that in one way or another brings you down. That friend that you’re terrified of letting down. That friend that will talk behind your back or make YOU feel bad for the things he or she might actually be doing. The friend that always seems to get his or her way even when you suggest other alternatives.¬†That “toxic” friend.

Eek! Toxic friends. Scary!

I’ll go ahead and site this article about toxic friends that I found on WebMD as a source of some of the information I’m going to share. It might not be¬†the¬†most scholarly article, but it was interesting and insightful.¬†A toxic friend is defined as:

“a toxic friendship is unsupportive, draining, unrewarding, stifling, unsatisfying, and often unequal.”

“They might not be a toxic friend to others but they are to you.”

Draining is the word that really resonates¬†with me from the above¬†definition. I have had a few friendships in my life that were definitely draining. Some old, some new. All of them were equally stressful.¬†I would actually find myself worrying every night when I went to bed about those toxic friendships. Did the person still like me? Would they want to hang out with me if they found new friends? Were they talking behind my back to our other friends?¬†Why did they say those mean or passive-aggressive¬†things to me that day? Why are they always late or changing our plans at the last-minute¬†without explanation? Why do I seem to be the one constantly putting in effort and never getting the same kind of effort in return? And on, and on, and on…¬† It is exhausting having this kind of mental battle constantly! And it makes you feel a little crazy, too.

“It’s a pleaser personality — you want people to like you, you want to get along, and it’s hard to say no. But you can pay the price in one way by having toxic friends.”

The above quote defines me to a T. I’ve rarely been one to stand up for myself. Instead, I am always trying to please others or keep the waters calm. I’m not one to rock the boat, especially not in new situations or with new friends. I just don’t want to¬†offend, anger, or upset anyone in any way.¬†So, when I find myself in toxic relationships it is especially draining and emotionally taxing because I will give up so much of myself to try to please the other person to no avail.

Why can't we all just be at peace?!

“Toxic friends stress you out, use you, are unreliable, are overly demanding, and don’t give anything back”

Only recently have I started to focus on doing more things for “me” and stop doing everything to please others at the expense of my own happiness. This is a HUGE step for me especially when I am living in a place that is so far away from home, my family, and my best friends. I have had to break a few ties since moving here and, while it was hard at the time, it turned out to be very emotionally freeing. I’m nowhere near cured of the “toxic” curse or the guilt that I still feel sometimes, but I’m making small steps.

I feel so freeeeeee!!!

I have some GREAT friends (and a great boyfriend)¬†in my life and I realized recently that I was wasting so much time worrying about the toxic relationships that it was taking away from those great relationships in my life. What good is worrying about someone who doesn’t deserve that worry when it’s at the expense of those good friends that would do anything for me?

Friends through thick and thin

So, going forward, I am making an effort to be a little more self-preserving and a little less of a doormat. I think it’s important to¬†cherish the good friends in life!

Moving madness

It’s that time again. Time to gear up to move to a new apartment. Sigh…it feels like all I ever do is move! I’ve moved at least once a year since 2001. Neeless to say, I’m a pro at it!

This time is a little different because I’m moving in with the boy!

In a lot of ways this move is easier because I’ve been able to gradually start moving things in and won’t need to do it all on one hurried¬†day like the last time. Which is nice considering Texas has decided to continue to¬†torture us with 110 degree temps.¬†However, it involves some work on Michael’s end as he organizes his stuff and moves things around. So that’s what we started working on this weekend in preparation for the full move¬†which takes¬†place September 9th. Dear Texas, please cool off considerably by then so we don’t die!!

First thing on the moving to-do list was moving one of his computer desks from the former “computer room” (soon to be our bedroom) into the “spare room”. The monstrosity of a bed in the background is part of the provided furniture that comes with his apartment (the apartment is also a perk of his job…aka…we don’t pay rent or utilities!!).

The end product turned out pretty well. He had to downsize to only two monitors since he’s using only one desk for the time being (formerly he had three monitors and another desk entirely for two printers and loads of other stuff). I insisted the lovely Ikea lamp had to be on the¬†desk because I hate overhead lighting and only ever use lamps. I think lamps give off a much more homey feel.

Overall, I think the desk area has a nice calming feel to it. You just can’t see the total mess that’s lurking in the other half of the spare room ūüėČ

The livingroom and kitchen are still definitely works in progress!

That furniture will be going (it’s provided by his job and he opted to give it back) and my furniture will be moved in.

There’s still quite a bit of organizing to be done in the kitchen, but I made a nice dent in the progress while Michael set up the computer area.

So there you have it! Now you know what will be occupying most of my free-time for the next week and a half. Keep your fingers crossed that the weather cooperates and everything goes smoothly!

Friday photo flashback

Happy Friday, lovelies! This has been the longest week on record. I never thought Friday would get here! I guess the first week back to school, even when I’m not really the one in school, is always the toughest.

For today’s photo (video) flashback I wanted to share with you something from Ohio State.

I think you all know about my obsession with Ohio State by now, but this little diddy¬†really solidifies my love affair with the university. Last May, students and staff members did a flash mob in the new Ohio Union to Glee’s version of Don’t Stop Believin’ (um…OSU + a Journey song = I DIE!).

The new¬†Ohio Union is absolutely gorgeous!! You’ll get a little glimpse of it from the video. I visit it every time I’m back in Columbus and I’m jealous it wasn’t quite done when I was at OSU.

The thing that I love most about Ohio State is the overwhelming sense of school spirit that surrounds the school and the community. This video really shows how much the students and staff just love that university!

For some reason, I’m having WordPress¬†issues and can’t get the video to properly imbed (and Worpressers out there have some advice as to why this isn’t working?!), so it looks like you’ll have to view it through the link to the YouTube video. Do it…you won’t be sorry. I’ve watched it a million times and it still gives me goosebumps every time!

10 personal questions – part 2

It’s time for part 2 of the 10 Personal Questions. AKA…you get to hear me talk about myself some more ūüôā

For part one, see here.

10 Personal Questions, Part 2

What do you have on your bedside table?

A small lamp, 2 magazines, three books, my Kindle, a vase with flowers, my TV remote, and my iPhone. Also, on most nights there is a hair-tie or two and a tube of lip gloss

Do you have a tattoo?

Sigh…I’m not sure if this is a good or a bad thing, but yes. I have a tat. On my lower back. AKA a “tramp stamp”.

I swear, when I got the tattoo it was the “cool” place to get one. If I could go back in time, I probably wouldn’t get it again. It’s just not really my style anymore. I designed it myself and it’s a small cross with ivy twisted around it and a daisy in the center. Why a cross? No clue. I’m not overly religious and I never have been. I can’t really remember what was going through my head at the time that I got it (sophomore year of college during sorority recruitment). I guess the good thing is that it’s almost never visible.

Do you believe in abstinence before marriage?

No. I don’t think it’s a bad thing for those that do, but it was never something I valued. I do not think that choosing to have sex before marriage is necessarily a bad thing and I do not think that choosing to do so automatically makes a woman a bad person (or a slut). In general, I am a fairly liberal person so that’s where my opinion comes from on this matter. Again, I think it’s great that some people choose to wait if that is what aligns with their values and beliefs. It’s just not my own personal belief.

What is your worst habit?

Thankfully, I’ve given up a few of my really bad habits of the past. I would have to say that my worst habit is worrying. I am a constant worry-wart! I am also a bit of a control freak and when you mix that with the worrying it can be¬†a recipe for disaster! I’m trying to work on it.

How do you handle finances in your relationship? Or how would you like to handle finances in your future relationship?

Well, I’m not married yet, so currently Michael and I do our own thing financially. However, we are moving in together in two weeks (yay!) and then we will split the household¬†bills. I’m not sure what we’ll do about groceries though because I definitely have more expensive grocery taste/needs since I like veggies and overall “healthy” options and he can live on¬†frozen pizzas and grilled cheese¬†(I’ll likely pay more of those bills). No clue what we’ll do when we get married. I guess split everything? Luckily, we are both very fiscally responsible, so there’s no need to worry about that.

If you could change your name, what would you change it to?

I wouldn’t. I love the name Lisa and the fact that it’s not too¬†terribly common.

Where do you want to go on your next vacation?

Oh gosh..so many ideas come to mind! I’d love to go to NYC, Vegas, or a beach somewhere. I could really use a vacation right about now, too!

What is one political cause that you feel strongly about?

Women’s rights and gay rights

Have you ever stolen anything?

Nope! Goody two-shoes right here!

Tell us something embarrassing about yourself

I can never think of good answers to these kind of questions when I need to! The only random and maybe embarrassing thing I can think of is that when I was born I was tongue-tied (the little membrane thingy under my tongue was attached all the way to the tip and later had to be snipped) and I had a flat ear from the way I was laying in my mom’s belly. Luckily, the ear fixed itself and I now have normal ears with curves and all. Then as I got a little older I would keep my toes all pulled back except for my big toes which I would point straight up into the¬†air. All the time. So my mom couldn’t put shoes on me.¬†I joke with my mom that I’m surprised she didn’t give me away when I was a child b/c of all that randomness!

Bring on the pumpkins

As I mentioned yesterday, with the start of school comes the start of fall, so¬†I have¬†fall on the brain. For me, fall is not just a season it is an OBSESSION! I’m probably the opposite of most people because I get so excited as summer draws to a close. There are just so many awesome things about the fall!

Since Texas is kind of lacking in the “fall” season, this post will at least let me reminisce about the things that I loved about fall when I lived in a state that actually¬†had seasons. If you’re in one of those areas of the world just know that I’m extremely jealous! Send me some pics of changing trees or something to tide me over.

Fall means the start of college football. Especially Buckeye football!

No need to really elaborate here other than to say that¬†the start of college football season has always been one of my favorite things. What’s better than college football, tailgating, grilling out¬†with friends for away games, cheering on¬†your favorite team, and heading to the Shoe on a Saturday for a Buckeye’s game? Answer: nothing!¬†I love football¬†Saturdays and when I worked at Ohio State it was such a thrill to hear the band’s fight song echoing through campus on game-days. ¬†Please no mean comments about the current situation involving Ohio State and the football team. I’m pretending¬†that nothing has happened!

Fall means changing leaves.

I just love the way nature looks during the fall. The clear skies and changing trees are just beautiful! As the weather turns cooler, I love to bundle up on crisp fall nights and enjoy the outdoors. I’d much rather be outside in the fall when it’s cooler than during the summer when it’s so hot.

Fall means the Pumpking Spice Latte at Starbucks is back on the menu!

Oh man, do I ever love the day when the pumpkin spice latte is finally back at Starbucks. In fact, I love anything and everything pumpkin spice. Pumpkin muffins, pumpkin donuts, pumpkin pie…you name it, I love it!

Apparently Starbucks is having a competition this year to bring the PSL to your town one week earlier than the normal release date. Come on FW, we’ve gotta get on this!!

Fall means Halloween

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I love the candy (duh…candy corn is amazing), I love the movies (more on that in a sec), and I love to dress up and go to Halloween parties. Halloween was big at my college, so the love of it has kind of stuck with me.

Fall means horror movie marathons on TV!

I love me some old-school horror movies and October brings with it horror movie marathons for Halloween. I like all the cheesy classics like Halloween, Poltergeist, Friday the 13th, etc. My DVR always works overtime in the month of October.

Fall means sweaters, sweatshirts, and other fall clothing

I’m a sweater-a-holic. I love a good, comfy sweater or sweatshirt. I also have a thing for coats and scarves, so I don’t mind when the temps drop even further so I can further accessorize for the crisp weather.

Fall means pumpkins!

I love pumpkins and so does Perry…

Hmmm...what is this thing?

Smells kinda funny

Is anyone else as excited for the fall or am I the only werido out there that is happy summer is coming to an end?!
